2014 Healthy Rural Communities Toolkit was developed as a Locally-Driven Collaborative Project funded by Public Health Ontario. This tool kit identifies land use and development strategies that can help to enhance the rural built environment and contribute to positive quality of life and health outcomes. The tool kit brings a rural lens to issues that are often viewed from an urban perspective. Numerous examples and innovative practices from across the province are profiled. This tool kit recognizes many characteristics associated with rural communities including a low density population, a declining population in some areas, aging citizens, youth out-migration, rural land uses and an economy that is significantly different from that of urban Ontario.

Ontario has already made significant progress towards reducing poverty in the province. But we recognize that this is a multi-faceted, complex problem. We need a sustained, comprehensive, flexible and results-driven approach. As we heard in our consultations, we need to recognize that poverty has many faces and that tackling this challenge requires a shared effort.
The new Poverty Reduction Strategy — Realizing Our Potential — will expand our poverty reduction efforts to reach more vulnerable people and will continue to reduce poverty in Ontario."

Mental health is a key component of overall health and well being. However, the role of public health in mental health in Ontario has not been well-described. For instance, the Ontario Public Health Standards lack an explicit mandate to address mental health despite the obvious links with our core business of preventing illness and promoting health.
The purpose of this research study was to understand how Ontario’s 36 public health units address and promote mental health in children and youth.
