Making Children the Priority: Early Childhood Development in Priority Neighbourhoods

 


The Health Neighbourhoods initiative examines information for 50 Health Neighbourhoods in Durham Region to better understand patterns of health in our communities. The ultimate goal is to support strong, safe and equitable neighbourhoods that improve the health and well-being of all residents.

OPHA Cross-Appointment (non-voting): Karen Ellis Scharfenberg.

Karen is the President of the Ontario Public Health Association; OPHA as of April 1, 2018 – March 31, 2020.  She has been a member of the OPHA Board of Directors for 5 years and has a passion for effective public health policy as well as board governance. Karen is also the Chief Nursing Officer of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) and a member of SMDHU Executive. Karen holds both a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Masters of Business Administration (MBA).  Karen has over 15 years’ experience in Public Health at both the frontline level and management roles.  Throughout her career, Karen’s positions have progressed both in responsibility and complexity.
