Tuberculosis

Position:

The Government of Canada must ensure that all "Medical Surveillance Undertakings" are brought to the attention of local medical officers of health.  Individuals placed on medical surveillance must be provided with sufficient, culturally sensitive information regarding local health clinics. The government must further ensure that these individuals are followed by Citizenship and Immigration Canada to verify that they have reported to local clinics. In addition, the government must ensure that resources are locally available for timely and full assessment of the individual on medical surveillance.

Resolutions:
#A01-13, Tuberculosis Control Among New Immigrants to Canada

Status:
Open

Recent Developments:

July 10, 2002
Received a letter from Federal Citizenship and Immigration Minister Denis Coderre summarizing present policies and indicating that a Medical Surveillance Unit was established by the Ministry in February of 2001.  It was also indicated that Ontario now has a single-source TB contact to deal with TB surveillance issues.

Notes:

  • Sudbury District Health Unit's P. Sutcliffe sent a letter to Minister Caplan with the same wording as the Durham-sponsored alPHa resolution on March 21, 2001.
