Howard Shapiro is the Director of Healthy Environments & Associate Medical Officer of Health for Toronto Public Health. Prior to joining the City of Toronto Dr. Shapiro worked at the Region of Peel in 2001 focusing on communicable diseases and was Acting Medical Officer of Health for 10 months. He has been at Toronto Public Health since 2006 specializing in environmental health. His interests include vector borne and enzootic diseases, safe water, impacts of extreme weather and emergency response. Dr. Shapiro was a member of the Health Professionals Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission and has worked at Public Health Ontario as a Physician Specialist in Environmental and Occupational Health. Dr. Shapiro received his MD from Queen’s University in 1995 and his Fellowship in Public Health and Preventive Medicine in 2001. Dr. Shapiro has seen the third highest number of bird species in Toronto among people reporting to eBird.
