Public health units deliver programs and services for the long-term improvement in the health of the population. Over the years, they have developed a strong, effective provincial structure for health promotion and protection, disease prevention and surveillance. Health units are required by law in this province to carry out a number of programs in the following areas:
- communicable disease control
- chronic disease prevention
- immunization
- family health
- dental health
- environmental health
- health promotion and information
- emergency preparedness
