Ontario Jurisdictions

THE ONTARIO DIRECTORY OF JURISDICTIONS is a 150-page directory that provides a complete listing of towns, cities, hamlets, and municipalities all cross referenced by health unit. Conveniently, it also lists towns that technically don't exist anymore, but have been included nonetheless for reference purposes. Having information about these former towns is useful as illustrated by this example:

One day, old Mr. Jones calls a health unit from Pelly Point, where he lives. However, Pelly Point amalgamated years ago with the main city, Smith's Falls. Mr. Jones still refers to his town as Pelly Point, though. The new health unit staff member taking the call is not aware of Pelly Point. With this directory, the staff person can find Pelly Point  listed in the directory. A health unit may not be aware of old town references which can make it difficult for staff (especially for laboratories) to do their job.

In previous years, the Ontario Directory of Public Health Agencies used to include a similar listing of towns and municipalities for each health unit, but no longer provides such a list. The Ontario Directory of Jurisdictions, therefore, is recommended for health units and laboratories across Ontario who would find such information valuable.
