Report on the State of Public Health in Canada
Lynne Slotek delivered remarks on behalf of Roy Romanow, who was not able to attend due to illness. Printed copies of his remarks were made available and can be downloaded below. His words emphasized the connections between economic and social indicators that are often not made in traditional discourse about “national health”. Examining the relationship among low income, poor health and high medical costs makes these connections abundantly clear.

Understanding and Addressing Health Inequities in British Columbia
Dr. Millar presented extensive data from his home province that clearly demonstrate not only the elevated health risks associated with low-income, but also that the current model of dedicating ever-increasing resources to a health care system that is focused on treating disease is in fact a threat to population health, as it corresponds to reducing expenditures related to education, income security, housing, environment and other determinants of health.

Dr. Pascal referred to his recent report on early learning, With Our Best Future in Mind, to illustrate the critical importance of early child development as an upstream intervention to reducing risks to health throughout the lifespan. He characterized the report as a public health document and an economic stimulus document based on the vision of providing truly integrated children's services throughout Ontario.

Dr. Heather Manson spoke of the significant asset that Ontario has in the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion, with its specific legislated object to reduce health inequities, supported by specific language in the Ontario Public Health Standards that require boards of health to undertake activities that are specifically aimed at improving health in priority populations.
