West Nile Virus Update

The COMOH Maincert committee in collaboration with the TPH  Maincert committee and the UoT Community Medicine Residency Program is pleased to present these rounds.

  • To review key concepts in ecology and virology as it applies to WNV
  • To review the epidemiology of WNV in North America
  • To describe local WNV programs using Toronto Public Health and Peel Health as examples

Discuss and apply in practice the community health intervention programs/strategies applicable to environmental health, especially those related to health protection including monitoring of health status, statutory responsibilities for public protection: regulations, standards, public policy approaches to health protection (e.g., limitations on legal, physical, and economic approaches).

Discuss and apply in practice major environmental health hazards and diseases.

Discuss and apply in practice the health services organization aspects applicable to environmental health.

Discuss and apply in practice program management as applicable to environmental health.

Syndromic Surveillance Workshop

Part of alPHa's mid-winter all-members meeting, this workshop will provide an overview of the definitions of syndromic surveillance and its application to public health planning and practice. Examples to be discussed include
  • Using 911 information for heat related illness
  • Using Emergency Room Information for surveillance
  • Using over the counter drug store information for enteric illness
  • Brief description of pandemic indicators
  • Brief description of use of Telehealth information
The session will conclude with a panel discussion on how to increase the use of syndromic surveillance for public health decision making and funding

Building Healthy Communities Workshop
 
Occupying the second day of the mid-winter alPHa all-members' meeting, the goal of this workshop is to increase the understanding of the connection between public health programs and the built environment. It will include historical connections between health and human development of cities, towns, utilities and infrastructure, and a look at current initiatives aimed at improving health by examining these relationships. Paricipants will be challenged to identify the roles that they can play in their own communities to ensure that structural development supports overall health and wellness.

 A panel discussion of career options and decision-making factors for community medicine specialists. Panelists: Dr. Anne Carter (Medical Officer of Health – Leeds,Grenville & Lanark District Health Unit); Dr. David Mowat (Director General of the Office of Public Health Practice, Public Health Agency of Canada); Dr. Donna Reynolds (Team Leader, Clinical Development, Sanofi-Pasteur); Dr. David Williams (Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health and Director, Infectious Diseases, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care)

Please note that this event is a one-hour session (11:00 a.m. -12:00 Noon.) during a regular face-to-face meeting of the Council of Ontario Medical Officers of Health (COMOH), which is normally open only to Council members. Non-members are welcome to attend this portion of the meeting by contacting Cathy Dyer (cathy@alphaweb.org; 416-595-0006 ext. 24). alPHa will invoice non-COMOH registrants at a discounted rate of $25.00 for the Educational Session Only, or $65.00 for the Educational Session with Lunch (served from 12 Noon - 1:00 p.m.).
